BEIJING, May 26 (AFP) - The United States uses its press freedom solely to bolster world domination, lie, and carry out subversive activities, students at one of China's foremost schools of journalism said Wednesday. "Press freedoms of the US ... have always been used to serve hegemonism, fabricate lies wantonly, spread rumors and carry out subversive activities," Cheng Mei, a professor at the journalism school of People's University, told the Xinhua news agency. "If you report the facts you will be accused of destroying press freedom and get killed," she said, in an apparent reference to three Chinese journalists killed in NATO's accidental bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade. Student Yao Lili said she and her peers who once "had a fancy" for the Western media now see "the hypocrisy of US press freedoms that serve political groups and bang the drum for power politics and unjust wars." It was the "blood of the Chinese martyrs" killed during the bombing that allowed her to see the truth, she said. Journalism school head Guo Qingguang told the news agency he blamed the NATO attack, which the US and other member states have called a tragic error and for which they have offered multiple apologies, on the "US's fear of the voice of justice." The May 7 bombing killed three Chinese and injured another 20, sparking three days of nationwide student protests, fully supported by the central government.
