ISLAMABAD, May 26 (AFP) - Pakistan Wednesday called on United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan to send an envoy to calm escalating border tensions with India in the disputed Himalayan state of Kashmir. "The secretary general should send an envoy to the region for preservation of peace and security," a foreign office spokesman said, also calling for a reinforcement of the UN Military Observers Group for India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP). In a statement, the spokesman berated India's unprecedented air raid Wednesday against "the so-called infiltrators with MI-17 gunship helicopters backed by jet fighters." The strikes on Moslem rebels followed increased "violations" of the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Kashmir by Indian forces killing "innocent civilians (and) causing damage to property," he said. "Inside the Indian-held Kashmir, the Indian forces have continued their brutal repression of the innocent Kashmiris who are engaged in an indigenous struggle for their right of self-determination." The spokesman added that some bombs from the Indian air strikes had fallen on "our side, which is a clear violation of the LoC. We believe such an escalation is unwarranted and it should be avoided." He warned that military action behind the "smokescreen of flushing out the 'infiltators' is fraught with dangers." "Pakistan reserves the right to respond appropriately. The responsibility in such a situation would lie squarely on India," he said, underscored the "urgency" of finding a political solution for Kashmir. Welcoming Tuesday's statement by Annan calling for restraint and an end to the fighting, the spokesman said the present crisis required that the UNMOGIP be "immediately reinforced and activated." -=-=-
