PARIS, May 26 (AFP) - Visiting Indian Foreign Minister Jaswant Singh on Wednesday justified his country's air strikes on Moslem militants in Kashmir and played down concerns that the crisis could lead to a full-blown conflict with Pakistan. Singh, speaking at a joint press conference with his French counterpart Hubert Vedrine, insisted that the air strikes had taken place within the Indian side of the so-called Line of Control dividing the Indian-held and Pakistani-controlled zones of Moslem-majority Kashmir. "The action that has been taken is within the Indian side of the Line of Control," Singh said, adding that it was in reaction to intrusions by the Moslem militants. He said concerns that the strikes could lead into a full-blown conflict with Pakistan were "entirely misplaced." Vedrine for his part called on all sides to show proof of restraint in order to avoid an escalation. He said that during his lunch meeting with Singh the discussions had focussed on the Kosovo crisis and the situation in Russia as well as an overall review of Indo-Chinese and Indo-Pakistani relations. Singh was in Paris for a meeting between ministers of the 29-member Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and major non-member developing countries. He was to meet with President Jacques Chirac later Wednesday and was expected to leave Paris Friday morning.
