KATHMANDU, May 26 (AFP) - A Swedish couple became the first husband and wife team to scale Mount Everest together on Wednesday, the Nepalese tourism ministry said. Thomas Sjogren and his wife Tina Sjogren, both 49, reached the top of the world's highest mountain some 8,848-metre-high (29,028-foot) high on Wednesday. Tina Sjogren was leading her 11-member Swedish '99 International Everest Expedition. "This is the first time a couple has conquered the world's highest pinnacle together," the announcement said. Mexicans Hugo Barroso, 37, an engineer and Carlos Pereda, 25, a businessman, also reached the summit early Wednesday. All those reaching the summit had set off from their camp at the South Col Tuesday night. They stayed on the peak for about 30 minutes. Meanwhile, Babu Chhiri Sherpa of Nepal, who accompanied the Swedish team members set another record by climbing Everest twice in the same season, adding to his world record set last month for staying atop Mount Everest for 21 hours. Babu has now climbed Everest nine times. Apa Sherpa, also Nepalese, has also conquered Everest nine times. The only person to scale the world's highest peak 10 times is Nepal's Ang Rita Sherpa, who is now 50.
