UNITED NATIONS, May 25 (AFP) - UN Secretary General Kofi Annan urged India and Pakistan to end their two weeks of fighting in the Kashmir region, his spokesman said Tuesday. Annan was "concerned" about the situation and called on the two countries to "exercise restraint and cease the fighting," the spokesman said. The two countries have battled in two wars for the Himalayan region, two thirds of which is controlled by India, while Pakistan holds the remaining third in the north. For the last 17 days, Moslem rebels backed by Pakistan and the Indian army have clashed along the border district of Kargil in the most serious fighting since 1988. Tuesday alone, some 100 Moslem fighters were killed in Kashmir, an Indian military commander said. The battles may jeopardize recent initiatives to improve bilateral relations between the two countries, which shocked the world last year with tit-for-tat nuclear tests.
