INGLEWOOD, Calif., May 20 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Sparks forward Pam McGee, a member of one of the best college teams in women's basketball history, announced her retirement Thursday. McGee was the second pick in the inaugural WNBA draft by the Sacremento Monarchs. She was traded to the Sparks for forward Linda Burgess on April 28, 1997 and averaged 10.6 points in 27 games in 1997. Her production dipped to 6.8 ppg in 30 contests last season. ``I've had an illustrious career and it is always sad when it comes to an end,'' said McGee. ``But I'll never regret my experiences with the Sparks and the WNBA. I am proud that I have been a pioneer in the sport of women's basketball. I feel like I have helped build a bridge for the league we have today.'' McGee, 36, was a two-time All-American at Southern California and teamed with twin sister Paula and Cheryl Miller to win consecutive NCAA titles in 1983 and 1984. The team also featured two-time WNBA Most Valuable Player Cynthia Cooper and Sparks general manager Rhonda Windham. The 1983 squad went 31-2 and still owns the school record for wins in a season. ``It has been both a personal and professional pleasure to work with Pam at this level,'' said Windham. ``She brought leadership and experience to our team. Pam will always be an integral member of the Sparks family. We wish her much success in all her future endeavors.'' McGee was named Most Outstanding Player in the 1984 NCAA Tournament and captured a gold medal at the Los Angeles Olympics later that summer. She ranks second on the school's all-time list in rebounding and fourth in scoring. Before coming to the WNBA, McGee played eight seasons in Europe with seven teams in Spain, Italy, France and Brazil. She was a four-time Italian League All-Star with Palermo and Parma.
