NEW YORK (AP) -- Duke's Elton Brand and Connecticut's Richard Hamilton, two of the top players in college basketball, are leaving school early to join the pros. Brand, college basketball's player of the year as a sophomore, and Hamilton, who helped Connecticut win the national championship as a junior, were among 39 players who have filed as early-entry candidates for the NBA draft. Brand, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 17.7 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.21 blocked shots in leading Duke into the NCAA championship game against UConn. Hamilton, an All-American, helped UConn win its first NCAA title after averaging 21.5 points and 4.8 rebounds. The list of underclassmen also includes Rhode Island's Lamar Odom, the Atlantic 10 tournament MVP. Odom, a 6-10 sophomore forward, averaged 17.6 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.8 assists for Rhode Island. The draft is scheduled for June 30 at the MCI Center in Washington. Players who have filed for early entry can withdraw from consideration by notifying the NBA at least one week prior to the draft. The present early entry list includes five freshmen, 11 sophomores, 11 juniors, two high school players and 10 foreigners. Among other early entry candidates: Steve Francis of Maryland, sophomore Baron Davis of UCLA, and high school stars Jonathan Bender of Picayune (Miss.) High and Leon Smith of Chicago's Martin Luther King High. Also, sophomore Ron Artest of St. John's, sophomore William Avery and freshman Corey Maggette of Duke, redshirt freshman Dion Glover of Georgia Tech, and junior Jamaal Magliore of Kentucky. Glover, however, reportedly had a change of heart, and a final decision was expected by Monday. Francis led Maryland to the final 16 of the NCAA tournament after averaging 17 points and 2.79 steals and was a second-team All-American. Davis, a third-team All-American, averaged 15.9 points, 5.1 assists, 3.6 rebounds and 2.52 steals. The tallest player in the early entry list is 7-3 Aleksandr Radojevic of Barton County (Kan.) Community College. The only other 7-footer is 7-1 Josko Poljak, a 21-year-old from Croatia. -=-=-
