BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- The Texas Rangers had both shortstop Royce Clayton and outfielder Juan Gonzalez back in the lineup tonight, but it was not enought to prevent a 3-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles. Clayton was activated from the disabled and went 1-for-3 in his first game since tearing a muscle in the back of his shoulder April 30 at Cleveland. He is hitting .159 with just two extra-base hits and one RBI in 63 at-bats this season. Gonzalez, the American League Most Valuable Player two of the last three seasons, had not played since straining his right hamstring during a home run trot May 11 against the Chicago White Sox. He went hitless in four at-bats but had an RBI groundout in the ninth inning. Gonzalez, 29, is hitting .313 with eight homers and 30 RBI this season. The Rangers signed Clayton to a four-year, $18 million contract in the offseason after obtaining him and righthander Todd Stottlemyre from St. Louis on July 31 for lefthander Darren Oliver and third baseman Fernando Tatis. Clayton, 28, began his major league career with San Francisco in 1991 and was traded to the Cardinals after the 1995 season. He became the heir apparent to future Hall of Fame shortstop Ozzie Smith, who retired after the 1996 campaign. To make room for Clayton, the Rangers optioned shortstop Kelly Dransfeldt to Oklahoma. Dransfeldt hit .189 with one homer and five RBI in 16 games.
