SPORTSTICKER NL RECAP MIAMI (Ticker) -- Livan Hernandez pitched a four-hitter and rookie Alex Gonzalez belted a two-run homer as the Florida Marlins won consecutive games for the first time this season with a 8-1 pounding of the Pittsburgh Pirates. Hernandez (3-4) scattered four singles and allowed an unearned run with three walks and six strikeouts en route to his second complete game this season and 11th of his career. The Cuban righthander threw 80 of his 124 pitches for strikes and allowed just two hits over the final seven innings. "Complete games are important to a lot of pitchers," Hernandez said. "You do your work until you're not needed anymore. I was more concerned with location rather than velocity. I knew I could throw the fastball, but spotting the ball was more important." Gonzalez's fourth homer with two outs in the third off Pittsburgh starter Pete Schourek (2-4) snapped a 1-1 tie. Preston Wilson added a solo homer in the fourth for the Marlins, who improved to just 7-18 at Pro Player Stadium. Florida (13-29) has the worst record in the majors. "That's a big win," Florida manager John Boles said. "We haven't won two in a row this year and with our record that's cause for celebration." Schourek failed in his bid to win consecutive starts for the first time this season as he allowed six runs -- two earned -- and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. The lefthander walked one and struck out three. Warren Morris accounted for the lone Pittsburgh run with an RBI single in the second. Following a three-game winning streak, the Pirates have dropped a season-high five straight games. "We had a nice team meetings to discuss some things like the terrible baseball we've been playing," Pittsburgh manager Gene Lamont said. "You can't blame it on the road. Big league teams have to win on the road." With the help of some shaky defense, the Pirates got on the board first in the second. Jason Kendall led off with a single and went to second when Wilson bobbled the ball in center field. Ed Sprague reached one out later on an error by shortstop Gonzalez and Morris followed by lining a single to center. Hernandez was able to pitch around three Florida errors as he put together two straight wins for the first time this season. Florida took the lead for good in the third. Marc Redmond singled with one out and went to second on a groundout. Schourek struck out Craig Counsell for the third out but the ball got by catcher Kendall, who threw wildly to first, allowing Redmond to score. Gonzalez was able to take advantage of the extra out in the inning by launcing a 1-2 pitch over the left-field wall, giving the Marlins a 3-1 lead. The Marlins added two more runs in the fourth. Rookie Keith Millar, recalled earlier in the day from the minors, led off with a triple and scored on a groundout by Derek Lee. Wilson smacked his eighth homer one out later. Wilson's double in the sixth gave the Marlins a five-run cushion and Millar provided the final margin with a two-run double in the next inning. Millar, who was 2-for-4, played in two games with the Marlins last season, collecting one hit. "My first at-bat my hands were shaking, but experience is an important thing," Millar said. "It's an amazing thing. I took a long flight and left 12:30 last night from Calgary and got in 10:30 this morning. I got no sleep at all."
