HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Houston Astros today signed veteran infielder Bill Spiers to a contract extension through the 2000 season with a club option for 2001. Terms were not disclosed. Spiers is in the second year of a two-year, $2.9 million deal. He is batting .308 with two homers and seven RBI in 25 games for Houston this season. Last year, the left-handed hitting Spiers platooned at third with Sean Berry and batted .273 with four homers and 43 RBI. But after the Astros signed third baseman Ken Caminiti as a free agent, Spiers' role changed this season to that of a utility player. The 32-year-old Spiers is a lifetime .265 hitter with 32 home runs and 313 RBI in 1,022 major league games with the Milwaukee Brewers (1989-94), New York Mets (1995) and the Astros. Houston originally signed Spiers as a free agent in December 1996. In 1997, Spiers hit a career-high .320 with four homers and 48 RBI for the Astros.
