NL RECAP MIAMI (Ticker) -- Al Martin's run-scoring double snapped a ninth-inning tie as the Pittsburgh Pirates overcame an early five-run deficit for a 6-5 win over the Florida Marlins. Pinch-hitter Mike Benjamin led off the ninth with a single off Vic Darensbourg (0-1) and moved to second on a balk. Pinch-hitter Keith Osik flied out to send Benjamin to third and, with the infield in, Martin hit a popup that fell in shallow left-center field to give the Pirates a 6-5 lead. "Tomorrow I'll be telling everybody that it went off the wall," Martin said. "If I get one million hits like that, I'll take them. They're better than lineouts." The Pirates overcame the first major league homer by Florida starter Alex Fernandez, who remained winless since April 5 after the bullpen blew a 5-3 lead. Jeff Wallace (1-0) struck out four in two scoreless innings for his first major league win and Mike Williams walked one and struck out two in the ninth for his seventh save in eight chances. "We stayed after them and finally got a base hit," said Pittsburgh manager Gene Lamont. "It was a tough trip but we ended up with two wins and we'll take that." Pittsburgh managed a split of the four-game series. Four Pirates relievers shut down the Marlins after Jason Schmidt was tagged for five runs and eight hits in 1 2/3 innings. "Nothing hurts, but I feel like I'm throwing basketballs to home plate," Schmidt said. "What else can you say when you rear back and throw and nothing comes out." Pittsburgh tied the game in the sixth. Brian Edmondson walked Jason Kendall and Ed Sprague singled to put runners on the corners. Kendall came home on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 5-4 and Jose Guillen singled up the middle to move Sprague to third before Abraham Nunez grounded into a run-scoring double play. Fernandez pitched five innings, allowing three runs and five hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Fernandez, who is coming off rotator cuff sugery last season and has been on the disabled list with inflammation in his shoulder, is limited to 85 pitches in each start. "It's very frustrating because you're not able to pitch your game," Frenandez said. "It"s not (Manager John) Boles' fault, it's my fault. It's a medical neccessity and that's the way it is. They're looking at the longevity of my career." Kevin Millar had a two-run double and scored on Mark Kotsay's RBI single as the Marlins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Mike Redmond singled up the middle to start the second and Fernandez hit Schmidt's 2-0 pitch over the left-field fence for a 5-0 lead. Schmidt retired the next two batters, but was replaced by Chris Peters after allowing a single to Cliff Floyd. Peters gave up two hits in three scorless innings before Brad Clontz retired the only four batters he faced. Fernandez ran into trouble in the fourth when Brian Giles led off with a single, Kevin Young walked and Kendall was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Sprague's sacrifice fly cut Pittsburgh's lead to 5-1 and Jose Guillen grounded into a forceout to score Young. Martin doubled with one out in the fifth and scored on a single by Warren Morris. --=-=--
