SPORTSTICKER NL PREVIEW FLUSHING, New York (Ticker) -- Curt Schilling looks to become the first eight-game winner in the National League today when the Philadelphia Phillies battle the New York Mets in the rubber game of a three-game series. Schilling (7-1, 2.58 ERA) has allowed nine earned runs over 43 1/3 innings, with 33 strikeouts, in winning his last five starts. He has pitched four complete games in that span, including three straight, and has guided Philadelphia to a 8-1 mark in games he starts. Schilling is 10-4 with a 2.19 ERA over his career against New York. Jose Lima of Houston is also gunning for his eighth win at San Francisco today. The Mets hope Rick Reed (3-1, 5.96) can provide another solid outing. He surrendered just one run and four hits over seven innings on Tuesday against Milwaukee in a 4-2 win. In six starts, he has given up more than three runs only twice. Reed is 3-4 with a 3.79 ERA lifetime against the Phillies. Philadelphia snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday with a 9-3 triumph over the Mets as Mike Lieberthal homered and drove in four runs. It was New York's first loss in four games. The Phillies improved to 11-1 in day games, including a 7-0 mark on the road.
