SPORTSTICKER NATIONAL BASKETBALL ASSOCIATION WESTERN CONFERENCE TEAM REPORTS FOR FRIDAY, MAY 21 The Lakers made a handful of huge mistakes down the stretch of their 79-76 loss to San Antonio in Game Two of the Western Conference semifinals on Wednesday. G Kobe Bryant, who scored a playoff career-high 28 points and made a go-ahead 3-pointer with 36 seconds left, missed two free throws with 18 seconds to go. The Lakers had a foul to give but did not foul Spurs F Tim Duncan, who made a jump hook with 8.4 seconds left. On the next possession, Bryant and G Derek Fisher botched the in-bounds pass and the Spurs grabbed the loose ball. ... C Shaquille O'Neal scored 16 points, missing 8-of-10 free throws. It was his lowest total of the season other than April 20 at Golden State, when he was ejected in the second quarter. ... F Glen Rice made just 4-of-13 shots. * PORTLAND TRAIL BLAZERS ---------------------- G Isaiah Rider carried the Blazers down the stretch of Thursday's Game Two victory in Utah. Rider scored 21 points in the second half, including eight of Portland's last 10. "I wanted the ball," Rider said. "Everytime down I was waving my hands, `Come to me, come to me.' I mean I was on the ball. I felt good and they weren't double-teaming me like when Hornacek is guarding me. So I felt if they're not going to double-team me, it doesn't matter if you're my size or not, it's my advantage." ... The game featured the worst first quarter and first half in NBA postseason history. The 25 combined first-quarter points were one fewer than the Detroit Pistons and Boston Celtics combined for in the first quarter of an Eastern Conference finals game on May 30, 1988. The 65 points at the half were one less than the previous low, established twice during last season's playoffs. Charlotte and Chicago combined for 66 on May 6, 1998 and the Jazz and Bulls duplicated the feat during the NBA Finals on June 12. SAN ANTONIO SPURS ----------------- The Spurs got a big basket from F Tim Duncan down the stretch of Wednesday's 79-76 victory over the Los Angeles Lakers in Game Two of the Western Conference semifinals. Duncan made a jump hook over Lakers F. J.R. Reid with 8.4 seconds left and scored a team-high 21 points. ... C David Robinson had 16 points and seven rebounds but was limited to 30 minutes by foul trouble. He was picked up by F Malik Rose, who scored 13 points without missing a shot. He was 4-of-4 from the field and 5-of-5 from the line. ... The Spurs are allowing just 79.8 points per game in the playoffs. ... The starting backcourt of Mario Elie and Avery Johnson combined for just nine points. * UTAH JAZZ --------- Replays indicate that G John Stockton may have been fouled by Portland's Jimmy Jackson on a potential tying shots with two seconds remaining in Thursday's Game Two loss to the Blazers. But the NBA's all-time assist and steals leader took the high road when asked about the contact in the lane just prior to his missed layup attempt. "I should have made it," Stockton said. "I had an opportunity to make it and I didn't. I probably got fouled but it doesn't matter. I still should have made it. It was a makeable one, foul or no foul." ... The Jazz travel to Portland for Games Three and Four on Saturday and Sunday.
