AL RECAP KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Jeff Suppan pitched a five-hitter for his first career complete game and the Kansas City Royals completed a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 7-1 victory. Suppan (3-3) took a shutout into the ninth inning before allowing a leadoff double to Tony Phillips and consecutive singles to Ben Grieve and Jason Giambi. But he got Matt Stairs to ground into a double play and Tim Raines to bounce to first. Kansas City outscored Oakland, 34-7, in its first three-game sweep at home since August 29-31, 1995 against the Milwaukee Brewers. "He pitched a heckuva game," said Oakland manager Art Howe about Suppan. "You have to give him credit. We had a couple of opportunities but he pitched out of it. They played well, we caught them at a bad time. They're all hitting, they're making the plays, they're pitching well. Hopefully we can return the compliment." Suppan is 3-0 in his last six starts -- all Royals' wins -- after losing his first three outings this season. Two sparkling defensive plays by second base Carlos Febles helped Suppan shut the Athletics down. Febles went behind second base to snag a ground ball by Mike Macfarlene in the fourth inning and forced Giambi at second to end the inning. He also made a running over the shoulder catch on Jason McDonald's popup to shallow right field in the fifth. "Going out there I knew we scored a lot of runs the last two games, I was trying to go out there and focus on each inning," Suppan said. "Carlos Febles saved me tonight. There were just some outstanding plays by the whole `D.'" "Sometimes it feels better (than a hit) when I make a good defensive play," said Febles. "I really love playing defense so when I make a nice play I think it's better because I saved one run that inning that makes me fell happy and makes the pitcher happy too." Jermaine Dye smacked a two-run homer and Febles had a two-run triple for Kansas City, which has won 10 of its last 13 games and is three games over .500 for the first time since finishing the strike-shortened 1994 season at 64-51. "The last few days I've been seeing the ball pretty good and just trying to trust my hands and not try to do too much and great things have been happening," Dye said. Mike Oquist (4-3) was tagged for six runs and eight hits in five-plus innings for Oakland. Mike Sweeney led off the fourth with a single and Dye hit Oquist's next pitch over the left-field fence for his ninth home run and a 2-0 lead. Sweeney and Dye began the sixth with consecutive hits and Larry Sutton followed with an RBI single for a 3-0 edge. Chad Kreuter plated Dye and chased Oquist with a double to right center. Febles greeted Doug Johns with a triple into the right-field corner to score Sutton and Kreuter for a 6-0 advantage. One out later Carlos Beltran lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Febles. --=-=--
