SPORTSTICKER AL RECAP KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Carlos Febles and Rey Sanchez stroked consecutive run-scoring singles in the eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 5-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners, snapping their six-game winning streak. Jermaine Dye, who scored the winning run, added four hits and has recorded multi-hit games in six straight contests. It was his third career four-hit game and extended his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games. "It's mainly just in my head," said Dye of the reason for his success. "I am having fun and trying not to overdue it. I'm seeing the ball well, really all year." After Scott Service blew Kevin Appier's opportunity for a victory, Matt Whisenant (1-0) got the final out in the eighth. Jeff Montgomery recorded the final three outs for his fourth save in six opportunities. Following the game, Royals first baseman Jeff King, who has been plagued by chronic back problems throughout his 11-year career, announced his retirement. Jose Paniagua (2-4) surrendered both singles in the eighth for Seattle, which had won the opening two games of the series. Appier took a no-hitter into the fourth and finished by allowing just four hits and a run over seven innings. He walked one and struck out four. "I felt pretty good," said Appier. "All my pitches were working pretty well. The slider was breaking and running and the fastball had velocity." Seattle starter Freddy Garcia allowed three runs and eight hits over six innings. He walked two and struck out four. Ken Griffey Jr. had an RBI single in the eighth to extend his hitting streak to a career high 12 games. He has reached 12 games on five occasions in his illustrious career. "We played good and they played good," said Seattle manager Lou Piniella. "Appier is still a real dominant pitcher." Kansas City trailed 4-3 to begin the eighth. Mac Suzuki walked Mike Sweeney and Paniagua came on in relief. After a groundout moved Sweeney to second, Dye reached on an infield single. Chad Kreuter popped out but Febles singled to right to knot the game. Sanchez followed with a single to right for a 5-4 edge. "They were pitching me differently and I was trying to make adjustments," Febles said. "They were throwing me lots of offspeed pitches and now they started me with fastballs. I was protecting inside." The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the first on a run-scoeing groundout by Johnny Damon and an RBI single by Mike Sweeney. Garcia escaped further damage by getting Larry Sutton to bounce into an inning-ending double play. The Royals wasted leadoff doubles in the second and fourth but Appier kept the Mariners at bay into the sixth. Kansas City tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth when Sutton singled and Dye tripled. A run-scoring groundout by Butch Huskey in the seventh got Seattle on the board and Service came on for Appier to begin the eighth. After getting the first two outs, Matt Mieske singled and David Bell hit his 13th homer. Bell's 13 homers established a record for Seattle second basemen. Alex Rodriguez followed with a double and Whisenant came on for Service. Griffey greeted the lefthander with an opposite-field single that gave the Mariners a 4-3 edge. The 34-year-old King spent time on the disabled list earlier this season and has been limited to just 72 at-bats, batting .236 with three homers and 11 RBI. Seattle (21-22) was trying to move above .500 for the first time since it was 4-3 on April 12.
