6, BALTIMORE 4 ---------------------- BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Todd Greene's leadoff homer snapped a sixth-inning tie and the Anaheim Angels held on for a 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles after a spectacular baserunning gaffe by B.J. Surhoff. Greene hit rookie starter Jason Johnson's first pitch into the left-field bleachers for his eighth home run of the season and second in the three-game series. Troy Glaus provided an insurance run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly and rookie Scott Schoeneweis was called on to protect the 6-4 lead in the bottom of the inning. After Mike Bordick flied to deep left, Surhoff singled. Shigetoshi Hasegawa walked Albert Belle and allowed a single to Harold Baines, loading the bases. Jeff Conine hit a foul pop near the plate but Surhoff, believing there were two out, jogged down the third-base line. First baseman Chris Pritchett caught the ball and, urged on by catcher Matt Walbeck, tagged an embarrassed Surhoff to end the inning. Troy Percival pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save in 11 chances, nailing down the win for starter Tim Belcher (3-3). The veteran righthander allowed four runs and seven hits in seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts for his second straight win. Baltimore has dropped eight of its last 10 games. NY YANKEES 3, BOSTON 1 ---------------------- BOSTON (Ticker) -- Orlando Hernandez, whose slump has coincided with that of his team, pitched eight strong innings and Bernie Williams drove in two runs as the New York Yankees avoided a three-game sweep with a 3-1 win over the Boston Red Sox. Hernandez (4-4) won for the first time since April 23, allowing one run and two hits while walking two, striking out six and lowering his ERA from 6.56 to 5.76. He was 0-3 in his previous four starts, yielding 21 runs and 27 hits over 20 innings. Williams had a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning and a solo homer in the eighth as the Yankees won for only the second time in nine games and moved within a half-game of the first-place Red Sox in the American League East. Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth for his 11th save in 12 chances. He retired Troy O'Leary on a flyout and struck out Reggie Jefferson to strand runners at first and second. Mark Portugal (3-2) allowed two runs and three hits in six innings but the Red Sox lost for the third time in 14 games. He walked three and struck out three. TORONTO 7, DETROIT 0 -------------------- TORONTO (Ticker) -- The no-hitter was over early for rookie Roy Halladay, but this time he got the shutout. Halladay, who came within one out of throwing a no-hitter last season in his second major league start, fired a seven-hitter for his first career shutout as the Toronto Blue Jays ripped the Detroit Tigers, 7-0. Halladay (3-2) recorded his first win since April 18 and did it against the team that helped him to his first career victory last September 27. In that game, Halladay's no-hit bid was thwarted on pinch-hitter Bobby Higginson's two-out homer in the ninth. This time, Damion Easley singled with one out in the first to end any dreams of a gem. But it did not deter Halladay, who yielded six singles and a double. He walked none, struck out six and may have saved his spot in the rotation. Joey Hamilton, who has been on the disabled list since mid-April, made a start with Triple-A Syracuse tonight but allowed five runs and seven hits in five innings. Had Hamilton been impressive and Halladay unable to snap his five-start winless streak, Hamilton could have stepped into Halladay's spot in the rotation. Halladay is 2-0 with a 0.50 ERA in two starts against the Tigers, giving up one run and seven hits with 14 strikeouts and no walks. During his winless stretch, he surrendered 25 runs and 37 hits in 20 1/3 innings. Shawn Green had three hits, including a two-run homer, and three RBI. Tony Fernandez went 4-for-4 with two RBI for the Blue Jays, who won for only the fourth time in their last 13 home games. Dave Mlicki (1-4) was shelled for seven runs and 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings for Detroit, which has lost seven of its last nine games. The Tigers were shut out for the seventh time in 40 games this season after being blanked eight times all of last year. KANSAS CITY 7, OAKLAND 1 ------------------------ KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Jeff Suppan pitched a five-hitter for his first career complete game and the Kansas City Royals completed a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 7-1 victory. Suppan (3-3) took a shutout into the ninth inning before allowing a leadoff double to Tony Phillips and consecutive singles to Ben Grieve and Jason Giambi. But he got Matt Stairs to ground into a double play and Tim Raines to bounce to first. Suppan is 3-0 in his last six starts -- all Royals' wins -- after losing his first three outings this season. Jermaine Dye smacked a two-run homer and Carlos Febles had a two-run triple for Kansas City, which has won 10 of its last 13 games and is three games over .500 for the first time since finishing the strike-shortened 1994 season at 64-51. Mike Oquist (4-3) was tagged for six runs and eight hits in five-plus innings for Oakland. -=-=-
