AL RECAP (ANAHEIM-BALTIMORE) BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Todd Greene's leadoff homer snapped a sixth-inning tie and the Anaheim Angels held on for a 6-4 victory over the Baltimore Orioles after a spectacular baserunning gaffe by B.J. Surhoff. Greene hit rookie starter Jason Johnson's first pitch into the left-field bleachers for his eighth home run of the season and second in the three-game series. Troy Glaus provided an insurance run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly and rookie Scott Schoeneweis was called on to protect the 6-4 lead in the bottom of the inning. After Mike Bordick flied to deep left, Surhoff singled. Shigetoshi Hasegawa walked Albert Belle and allowed a single to Harold Baines, loading the bases. Jeff Conine hit a foul pop near the plate but Surhoff, believing there were two out, jogged down the third-base line. First baseman Chris Pritchett caught the ball and, urged on by catcher Matt Walbeck, tagged an embarrassed Surhoff to end the inning. "Somehow, I talked myself into thinking there were two outs," Surhoff explained. "The popup went up, I started running and it never entered my head that I was wrong. Things like that just can't happen. It's extremely disappointing. I felt like I let down everyone else in the room." "I was looking in the sky for the ball when Walbeck yelled, `Tag him, tag him,'" Pritchett said. "I was surprised (to see Surhoff). At first, I did not know what happened. No, it is not the weirdest play I have been involved in ... but it was fortunate for us." Troy Percival pitched a perfect ninth for his 10th save in 11 chances, nailing down the win for starter Tim Belcher (3-3). The veteran righthander allowed four runs and seven hits in seven innings with two walks and four strikeouts for his second straight win. "That's a hard hat win right there, when you pitch just well enough, score just enough runs and take advantage of the other team's mistakes," Belcher said. Johnson (0-1) took the loss in his Orioles' debut, yielding five runs and six hits in six innings with a walk and six strikeouts. Baltimore has dropped eight of its last 10 games. The Angels grabbed a 4-0 lead in the second as Garret Anderson led off with a double, Greene was hit by a pitch and both runners moved up on Pritchett's groundout. Glaus walked and Walbeck struck out, but red-hot Andy Sheets came through with a two-run single. Sheets stole second and Glaus was able to score on catcher Charles Johnson's throwing error. Darin Erstad capped the outburst with an RBI single. But the Orioles began chipping away in the bottom of the second on Cal Ripken's RBI double. Ripken, who has hit in nine straight games, sparked a four-run fifth with a leadoff homer. Two outs later, Brady Anderson walked and scored on Bordick's double. Surhoff followed with a single, forging a 4-4 tie and extending his hitting streak to 11 games. "We lost our head but Tim hung tough," Angels manager Terry Collins said. "After the Ripken home run, he gave three more good innings. His pitches were down in the zone. He used the split-finger and kept them off the fastball." --=-=--
