STRASBOURG, France, May 21 (AFP) - Former Olympic champion Jennifer Capriati of the USA won through to the final of the 190,000-dollar Strasbourg WTA event on Friday after beating qualifier Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic 6-4, 7-5 in windy conditions. The 23-year-old Capriati, who won the 1992 Olympic gold in Barcelona, is now ranked just 133rd in the world after personal problems, including being arrested for a drug offence, hampered her career. Capriati, who plays her first final since losing to Martina Hingis in Sydney in January 1997, will meet second seed Elena Likhovtseva of Russia who was a 7-6, 6-3, winner over American Mary-Joe Fernandez. "To play in such conditions was a real test," said Capriati afterwards. "Nothing is easy and you just have to keep calm. But I'm playing my best tennis for a long time and I'm really happy to have got through to the final." Capriati beat Likhovtseva in their only previous match in 1996.
