PARIS, May 21 (UPI) -- The French Open draw was released Friday and it revealed that top seeds Martina Hingis and Yevgeny Kafelnikov will have tough roads to the championship. Switzerland's Hingis and Russia's Kafelnikov, the No. 1 playersin the world, each face tough early-round matches in the year's second Grand Slam tournament, which begins Monday on the clay courts of Roland Garros. Hingis will face 86th-ranked Amanda Hopmans of the Netherlands in the opening round before a likely rematch of this year's Australian Open final with Amelie Mauresmo of France in the second round. Mauresmo opens against American Tara Snyder. Hingis defeated the upstart Mauresmo, 6-2, 6-3, in Melbourne, but fell to the 19-year-old just two weeks later in Paris. Currently ranked 18th in the world, Mauresmo was not seeded for the French Open. She knocked off three seeded players, including top seed Lindsay Davenport of the United States, to reach the Australian Open final. Kafelnikov, who won his second Grand Slam title at Australia earlier this year, will face American Michael Chang in a first-round battle of former champions. Kafelnikov captured the French Open in 1996, seven years after Chang became the youngest French Open and Grand Slam champion at the age of 17 years, three months. Both Kafelnikov and Chang have had their troubles of late. Kafelnikov had lost four straight matches before reaching the third round of last week's Italian Open and he is just 5-6 on clay this year. Chang, 9-11 overall on the year, has advanced past the second round just once and has watched his ranking slip to No. 50. Second-seeded American Pete Sampras, who has won 11 Grand Slam titles but is still gunning for his first at Roland Garros, begins his annual quest against Costa Rica's Juan Antonio Marin. Men's defending champion Carlos Moya of Spain, the fourth seed, faces Austria's Markus Hipfl in the first round. Hingis is not the only seeded woman to face the prospect of a difficult second-round opponent. Eighth seed Mary Pierce of France is on course to meet Spain's Conchita Martinez if each win their first-round matches. Pierce faces Joanette Kruger of South Africa and Martinez, who was ranked as high as No. 2 in the world in 1996, goes against Zimbabwe's Cara Black. Davenport, the second seed, faces fellow American Jane Chi in the opening round; defending women's champ and three-time winner Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain, seeded seventh, faces Mirjana Lucic of Croatia; third seed and three-time champion Monica Seles of the United States plays China's Fang Li and four-time winner Steffi Graf of Germany, the sixth seed, faces Maggie Maleeva of Bulgaria.
