PARIS, May 21 (AFP) - World number one Martina Hingis is set for a crunch second-round women's singles meeting with French player Amelie Mauresmo at next week's French Open at Roland Garros. The 18-year-old Swiss player beat Mauresmo in the women's singles final at the Australian Open in January and there was controversy after Hingis said facing the muscular French teenager was "like playing half a man". Hingis, aiming for her first French Open title, will face Amanda Hopmans of the Netherlands in her first-round mstch in the second Grand Slam tournament of the year, while unseeded Mauresmo opens against unseeded American Tara Snyder. Hingis was on Friday drawn in the same quarter as rising American star Venus Williams, winner of the German and Italian Open titles on clay. Hingis and Williams would meet in the quarter-finals if both make it that far. Williams opens against Alexandra Fusai of France but could then face former finalist Natasha Zvereva of Belarus in the second round. Five-time champion Steffi Graf of Germany, seeded sixth, opens against Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria, while second-seeded Lindsay Davenport of the United States is in a relatively easy-looking quarter and opens up against fellow American Jane Chi. Serena Williams, the younger sister of Venus and the 10th seed here, could face a fourth-round meeting with defending champion Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario of Spain if she wins her opening three matches: Serena Williams faces Laurence Courtois of Belgium in the first round, while seventh-seeded Sanchez-Vicario will open against Mirjana Lucic of Croatia. Monica Seles of the United States, the other three-time champion in the draw and seeded third, was handed a first-round match against China's Fang Li while fourth-seeded Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic opens against Ludmila Cervanova of Slovakia. Mary Pierce of France, seeded eight, opens against Joannette Kruger of South Africa but could face former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez of Spain in the second round. The top half of the 128-player draw is clearly the stronger, with Hingis, Mauresmo, the Williams sisters, Sanchez-Vicario and Novotna all in the same bracket. The tournament opens on Monday and continues through June 6.
