PARIS, May 24 (AFP) - Veteran German star Steffi Graf opens her campaign for a sixth French Open women's singles title on Tuesday when she takes on Maggie Maleeva of Bulgaria in the opening match of day two on centre court. Despite an injury-ravaged two years - Graf had to sit out last year's tournament here for her first non-appearance since 1983 - the veteran believes she is still capable of adding to her magnificent total of 21 Grand Slams to date. The centre court crowd has an appetising menu all round with 1997 men's champion Gustavo Kuerten following Graf onto the main show court. The eighth-seeded Brazilian, rated one of the favourites to triumph after wins on clay in Monte Carlo and Rome, takes on Spain's Galo Blanco. Pete Sampras will later enter the same arena to begin his quest for the only Grand Slam he has never won. The number two seed from the United States faces Costa Rica's Juan Antonio Marin. Australian crowd favourite and two-time US Open champion Pat Rafter, seeded three, will take on junior world champion Roger Federer of Switzerland. Women's world number two Lindsay Davenport plays her first match on court one against fellow American Jane Chi while third-seeded Monica Seles, a three-time trophy winner here, faces Fang Li of China on the same court.
