DUSSELDORF, Germany (Ticker) -- Australia's Patrick Rafter appears ready for next week's French Open after completing a successful two-week stretch by leading his country to victory today at the $1.9 million ATP Tour World Team Championship. Australia claimed its second title at this event by rallying for a 2-1 win over three-time champion Sweden. Jonas Bjorkman gave Sweden the early lead by defeating Mark Philippoussis, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), but Rafter forced the deciding doubles match by getting past Thomas Enqvist, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3, in a two-hour, 13-minute battle. "I made him run all over the place, but Patrick moved incredibly well," Enqvist said. "He must be the fastest player in the world." Rafter then joined forces with Sandon Stolle to defeat Bjorkman and Nicklas Kulti, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, and secure Australia's first title at this event since 1979. The Australian team collected $500,000 for the victory. Rafter reached last week's Italian Open final in Rome and lost to Gustavo Kuerten, costing Rafter the opportunity to become the world's No. 1 player. This week, Rafter went 3-1 in four singles matches and heads to the French Open on a roll. He is seeded third at Roland Garros and will meet Switzerland's Roger Federer in the first round. Australia earned a berth in today's final by going undefeated in three round-robin matches and won the Blue Group after defeating the United States on Friday in a prelude to the upcoming Davis Cup showdown in July. Sweden, which finished 2-1 in the round robin, lost for only the third time in 10 meetings with Australia at this event and was denied in joining the U.S. and Spain as four-time champions of this event.
