CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 24 (UPI) -- The Carolina Panthers will have two of their key offensive components at summer coaching sessions next week after signing rookie offensive tackle Chris Terry and re-signing running back Fred Lane Monday. Terry was Carolina's top pick -- 34th overall -- in last month's draft. He was a second-team All-America, a first-team All-SEC selection and a team captain as a senior at Georgia. The 6-5, 295-pounder will join the rest of his teammates at the Panthers' summer coaching sessions, which begin June 1. ``If you are a rookie player, it is in everyone's best interest to be at camp, and this helps Chris start on a positive note,'' first-year Carolina coach George Seifert said. ``I also think it says that he wants to get off to a good start.'' Lane re-signed a two-year deal as an exlusive rights free agent at undisclosed financial terms. The 5-10, 205-pounder led the team in rushing for the second straight season in 1998, carrying 205 times for 717 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games. He served a one-game suspension after missing a team plane and another for celebrating a touchdown while the team was on the wrong end of a blowout. Lane burst onto the scene as a rookie in 1997, totaling 809 yards and seven touchdowns on 182 carries. He signed as a free agent out of Lane College on April 19, 1997. Carolina ranked ninth in the 15-team NFC in total offense last season with 207.6 yards per game but was third from the bottom in rushing (90. 9). The team also re-signed exclusive rights free agent punter Ken Walter to a one-year deal. Walter ranked second in the NFC last year with a 38. 1-yard net punting average. He signed with the team two years ago as an undrafted free agent out of Kent State. Clubs have until June 1 to send tender offers to their unsigned restricted free agents or to extend qualifying offers to retain exclusive negotiating rights.
