SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) -- A construction worker installing a sewer line along with two of his adult sons was killed when a trench wall caved in, engulfing him. Emergency workers late Monday pulled Robert Whiteye's body from a 16-foot-deep trench about six hours after co-workers frantically tried to free him, only to see him slip deeper into the clay, sand and dirt. Whiteye, 50, of Thamesville, Ontario, was working with a private crew that included his two sons to install sewer lines in a residential area when the trench's wet, sandy side fell in on him about 4:30 p.m. Monday, officials said. ``He was trying to bring the last pipe to the manhole. It just collapsed,'' said Ron Demaagd, a Detroit city administrator. Co-workers were able to grip Whiteye after the collapse began but were unable to free him as it continued, burying him deeper. Three city inspectors had visited the site hours before the wall collapsed, Demaagd said. -=-=-
