HONG KONG, May 21 (AFP) - A Hong Kong man who tried to commit suicide by gassing himself in a bathroom ended up killing his girlfriend instead, it was reported Friday. A court heard on Thursday that Yeung Chun-yee, 31, tried to kill himself by cutting the gas pipe to the water heater. But he only succeeded in killing his girlfriend when the heater exploded as she opened the door, the South China Morning Post said. Yeung admitted recklessly endangering the life of Ng Lok-lin, 28, and damaging a flat in Tuen Mun which he rented. Sentencing was adjourned until June 3 for reports. Yeung first intended to commit suicide by inhaling thinner before stabbing himself to death with a pair of scissors, but he mistook a bottle of kerosene for thinner and failed to kill himself. He later cut the pipe at the bottom of the heater before lying in the bathtub waiting to be gassed. But his attempted failed as his girlfriend suddenly opened the door and the heater exploded. Ng died three weeks after the accident a year ago, from severe burns. The report did not say why Yeung wanted to commit suicide.
