BEIJING, May 25 (AFP) - China has given long jail terms to two men in the central province of Henan who killed swans, a protected species in the country, official media said Tuesday. The Shanxian County People's Court in Sanmenxia city sentenced Zhu Zhongping to 12 years and Zhao Shishi to 13 years and fined them 15,000 yuan (1,807 dollars) and 20,000 yuan respectively, Xinhua news agency reported. The two were accused of dumping 40 kilograms (88 pounds) of pesticide into a river near Shanxian County on December 23, 1998 in an attempt to kill wild ducks to sell them, the agency said. Hundreds of ducks and dozens of swans died and thousands of swans left the habitat, it said. A court statement said the two men had violated laws on the protection of rare and endangered species.
