LOS ANGELES, May 24 (UPI) -- Civil rights activists are calling for an independent investigation into the fatal shooting of a homeless woman by a police officer. Two Los Angeles police bicycle officers say they stopped the woman on Friday to see whether the shopping cart she was pushing had been stolen. Police say the woman lunged at them with a screwdriver and one of the officers lost his balance as he was trying to shoot the woman in the shoulder. The woman, who is still unidentified, died shortly afterward at a hospital. The director of Project Islamic Hope, Njee Ali, wants the Justice Department to look into the case to see if excessive force guidelines were violated, and called for a protest march outside LAPD headquarters to take place on Thursday.
