SYDNEY, May 24 (AFP) - The discovery of human remains in the vault of a disused bank in the remote outback town of Snowtown has become Australia's worst ever serial murder case, with police saying Monday they had recovered the remains of nine people. Following is a chronology of some other notorious serial murder cases in Australia: 1976-77: Seven women aged 15 to 26 are raped and killed in Truro, South Australia. James William Miller is jailed for life in 1980 after being found guilty of six of the seven murders. 1979-83: Five young men are killed in what become known as "The Family" murders. Police blame a homosexual gang, but only one man is charged, Bevan Spencer Von Einem. He is found guilty over one death and sentenced to 36 years in prison without the possibility of parole. 1986: Four young women are abducted, raped and murdered by husband-and-wife team David and Catherine Birnie in Perth. Both are now serving life sentences. 1989-90: Six elderly women are murdered by John Wayne Glover on Sydney's north shore. Glover is later jailed for life. 1989-92: Seven backpackers are killed in and around the Belanglo state forest in New South Wales in what was previously Australia's most notorious serial murder. A road worker, Ivan Milat, is eventually convicted and sentenced to seven life terms.
