ORLANDO, Fla., May 21 (UPI) -- A 68-year-old Orlando woman is still facing a possible murder charge in the shooting of her 42-year-old daughter. The daughter, Georgette Smith, died Wednesday after she was taken off life support following a judge's order granting her request to be allowed to die. The mother, Shirley Egan, already is charged with attempted murder in the shooting, which left Smith paralyzed. But prosecutors say the charge may be upgraded to murder after they receive a medical examiner's report on the exact cause of Smith's death. Egan says she did not intend to shoot Smith, but was merely using a gun to scare her daughter after learning of her plans to place her in a nursing home. Egan says the gun accidently discharged. Smith's attorneys say their client and Egan made peace in Smith's hospital room before the respirator was disconnected.
