PERTH, Australia, May 25 (AFP) - Australia's youngest bank bandits, two girls aged six and 11, were caught red-handed after smashing their way into a bank branch, police said Tuesday. The girls were found by police hiding under a desk in the bank when officers arrived to check a broken window and a silent alarm that had been activated. The pair broke into the Commonwealth Bank in Armadale, an outer Perth suburb, Sunday night by using chunks of concrete to smash a window, Sergeant Don Campbell said. He said the girls, who are cousins, had a bundle of what he called "silly items" of little value ready to take away. These included a set of darts and an empty compact disc case. Campbell said the pair had searched for money in teller areas and drawers, but had not found any. One girl had tampered with the digital combination control on the bank vault. Police said that, because of their ages, neither girl would be charged. The 11-year-old was given what is known as a juvenile caution. The younger girl is below the age of criminal responsibility -- 10 in Western Australia state -- and could not be charged or cautioned. Campbell said it was rare for children so young to be involved in such a serious crime. "We should all be concerned children as young as this were roaming the streets unsupervised," he said.
