Ruble firms by five kopecks against the dollar MOSCOW, May 21 (AFP) - The ruble firmed by five kopecks against the dollar on Friday to close at 24.65 to the US unit, ITAR-TASS reported. Trading on the Moscow Interbank Currency Exchange was 151.4 million dollars, the news agency said. Money supply meanwhile jumped by some three billion rubles to 232.1 billion rubles in the week ending May 17, the Central Bank reported. The figure represents the narrow definition of money supply of notes and coins in circulation. Money supply is being watched closely for signs of huge "emissions" likely to send inflation rising and the ruble falling. Acting finance minister Mikhail Zadornov said on Thursday that Russia had pumped some 11 billion rubles into the economy so far this year. The government is hoping to rein in the sliding ruble, which has slipped well below the 21.5-per-dollar mark set into the 1999 budget.
