LONDON (AP) -- The dollar was higher against most other major currencies in European trading Thursday. Gold was mixed. The euro was quoted at $1.0650, down from $1.0654 Wednesday. Other dollar rates compared with late Wednesday: 124.22 Japanese yen, down from 124.27; 1.5040 Swiss francs, up from 1.5018; 1.4652 Canadian dollars, down from 1.4676. The British pound was quoted at $1.6136, up from $1.6199. Midday in New York, the dollar bought 124.04 yen, while the euro was worth $1.0625 and the pound traded at $1.6128. Currencies of the 11 countries participating in the euro are no longer traded separately, though they remain in use. Based on euro rates, the dollar was worth: 1.8365 German marks, up from 1.8358; 6.1592 French francs, up from 6.1569; 2.0692 Dutch guilders, up from 2.0684; and 1,818.09 Italian lire, up from 1,817.41 Gold closed in London at $273.90 bid per troy ounce, up from $272.40 on Wednesday. In Zurich the bid price was $273.65, down from $274.65. Gold rose 70 cents in Hong Kong to $273.85. Silver closed in London at $5.29 bid per troy ounce, down from $5.30. -=-=-
