LONDON (AP) -- The dollar was mostly higher against other major currencies in European trading Friday. Gold prices fell. The euro was quoted at $1.0563, down from $1.0650 Thursday. Other dollar rates compared with late Thursday: 124.00 Japanese yen, down from 124.22; 1.5177 Swiss francs, up from 1.5040; 1.4584 Canadian dollars, up from 1.4652 The British pound was quoted at $1.6033, down from $1.6136. Midday in New York, the dollar bought 123.88 yen, while the euro was worth $1.0574 and the pound traded at $1.6014. Currencies of the 11 countries participating in the euro are no longer traded separately, though they remain in use. Based on euro rates, the dollar was worth: 1.8516 German marks, up from 1.8365; 6.2099 French francs, up from 6.1592; 2.0863 Dutch guilders, up from 2.0692; and 1,833.07 Italian lire, up from 1,818.09 Gold closed in London at $272.60 bid per troy ounce, down from $273.90 on Thursday. In Zurich the bid price was $272.55, down from $273.65. Gold rose $1.20 in Hong Kong to close at $275.05. Silver closed in London at $5.22 bid per troy ounce, up from $5.29. -=-=-
