TOKYO, May 24 (AFP) - The dollar rose against the yen in Tokyo on Monday in thin trade, dealers said. At 5:00 p.m. (0800 GMT) the dollar traded at 124.03-06 yen, up from 123.94-96 yen three hours earlier and 124.03 yen in New York late Friday. "There was no major news in the market," said Noriyoshi Tsunoda, chief dealer at Fuji Bank. The dollar shot up as high as 124.39 yen in early trade but slipped back down again as investors grew uneasy, said Tomoo Onishi, global market chief at Chase Manhattan Bank in Tokyo. Japan's vice finance minister Eisuke Sakakibara, dubbed "Mr. Yen" for his influence on currency markets, reportedly said he was closely monitoring the market. "The finance ministry's move so far is within market expectations," Onishi said. The euro fetched 1.0570-73 dollars at 5 p.m. (0800 GMT), up from 1.0563 dollars three hours earlier but down from 1.0576 dollars in New York late Friday.
