NEW YORK, May 24 (AFP) - The American Jewish community is committed to supporting Jordan's economy, leaders of major Jewish organizations said Monday at a breakfast here for King Abdullah II. "We are making a commitment to help create jobs" in Jordan and in the region, vice-chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Malcolm Hoenlein said. The king said economic development is the best way to combat fundamentalism "from any side." "There is a direct correlation between fundamentalism and economy," he added. The conference hosted the king as he wraps up a tour of western nations that included stops in Germany, Britain and Canada. His father, King Hussein, regularly met with the conference, which comprises leaders of more than 50 other Jewish groups of all stripes -- religious, cultural and political. Abdullah reiterated his satisfaction with Ehud Barak's win in Israel's elections last week, saying "we see eye to eye." He also repeated his support for making Jerusalem an open city. "This is a city for all people of the world," he said.
