Analysis

What are the underlying modes of evolution?

How is the energy distributed in these modes?

How do they interact?

How do we find them?

The Karhunen-Loeve Transform can help answer these questions. It has several nice properties which can be exploited to determine a set of orthogonal spatial modes of the system and determine a measure of the energy contained within each mode.
