General Program FAQs
Are students in this program eligible for the OPT STEM extension?
What is the CIP Code for this program?
The CIP Code is 11.1005, Information Technology Project Management.
What does the program cost?
Tuition is $65,000. Additional information on fees and estimated living expenses will be available by the end of June.
Who should apply to the Master of Science in Product Management program?
We expect our typical incoming students to have an undergraduate degree in computer science, computer engineering or software engineering, with at least one year of work experience building software products or services in industry. All incoming students should have sufficient programming and computer science skills to pass graduate-level computer science courses. Solid interpersonal skills are a must. We expect students to have strong social, written and spoken communication skills, which we'll assess through our candidate evaluation process.
When should I apply?
We have two application deadlines for the January 2019 start date. All applicants who submit by the deadline will receive an admissions decision on the notification date. If you're admitted, you must submit a $2,500 enrollment deposit and credential verification release by the date indicated to hold your seat in the class.
If I am not admitted to the program, can I reapply?
Sure! We welcome candidates who wish to reapply in a subsequent year, but you cannot reapply for the same program start date.
Is there a part-time option?
No. Our degree is only offered on a full-time basis. Carnegie Mellon does offer a similar part-time degree at its Silicon Valley campus, though.
Is there another location for this program or may I take the program remotely?
Our program is full-time program and only offered at Carnegie Mellon's main campus in Pittsburgh. The university offers a similar degree at its Silicon Valley campus that includes remote participation options for its part-time students, though.
How will I receive my admissions decision?
We release all admission decisions to candidates using our online application system. We'll notify you by email when we've made our decision, and you can then log into your application to view your admission decision. Keep your email address updated in the online application system to ensure you receive our communications.
May I receive an application fee waiver?
We do not issue fee waivers at the request of the applicant. We understand that the cost of a graduate education is not insignificant and requires financial planning and budgeting for many of our applicants and students. We encourage you to start early to create a plan as you look toward the future.
Am I required to take the GMAT/GRE? When should I take the GMAT/GRE? Is there a minimum score?
All applicants must complete either the GMAT or the GRE. Since both tests are offered year-round, the examination can be taken at any time. However, you should take the test no later than the application deadline for which you are applying. There is no minimum score required for either test.
What if I take the GMAT/GRE more than once?
When reviewing your application, our admissions committee always uses your best GMAT/GRE score at the time of application.
What is the minimum TOEFL score?
A minimum score of 600 PBT/250 CBT/100 IBT is required for international students entering the program.
Can I waive the TOEFL/IELTS?
Candidates must demonstrate a level of competence in English to meet the university's admissions requirements. You must take a TOEFL or IELTS exam unless:
- You attended and earned a bachelor's degree from an undergraduate institution where the sole language of instruction was English.
- You earned a graduate degree taught in English. Although not required, we do recommend that you take the English Language Proficiency exam.
Candidates who are required to take the TOEFL or IELTS must have received their unofficial scores prior to submitting their application. Be sure to have the testing agency send your official scores to Carnegie Mellon University.
