PITTSBURGH-Carnegie Mellon University's Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) Press announces the release of "Well Played 1.0: Video Games, Value and Meaning," a book for analyzing and understanding video games. The book is edited by Drew Davidson, program director of ETC-Pittsburgh, and features the work of 22 developers, scholars, reviewers and bloggers who look at video games through various levels of experience.

The book examines video games to see if they are "well played," referring to the quality of the game and how deeply it's played. Contributors use both senses of "well played" to determine what makes a game good or bad in hopes of developing a literacy for games, as well as a sense of their value as an experience.

"Well Played" is the third book published by ETC Press, following the release of "Beyond Fun" in 2008. The ETC Press is an academic, open-source publishing imprint that distributes its work in print, electronic and digital form. The ETC has a partnership with Lulu.com, and affiliations with The Institute For The Future of The Book and MediaCommons. ETC Press represents an experiment and an evolution in publishing, bridging virtual and physical media to redefine the future of publication.
