VNF Chain Allocation and Management at Data Center Scale

Offloading enterprise packet processing to the cloud is increasingly common. However, SLA requirements for outsourced packet processing differ from the SLA of the well-established compute and storage cloud services. In particular, tenants may want to bound the latency experienced by a VNF chain deployed in the cloud while guaranteeing the chain’s bandwidth. In this talk, I will present Daisy, our work in progress that uses three ideas to realize VNF outsourcing at data center (DC) scale. First, Daisy exposes a narrow API for tenants to manage VNF chains. Second, Daisy decouples a tenant’s view of the abstract chain from the cloud provider’s implementation of the concrete chain instance. Third, Daisy uses a novel locality-aware chain scheduling algorithm to achieve high DC utilization. I will report results from a Daisy prototype implemented at limited scale that we described in an ANCS 2018 paper. On a Facebook DC topology with 3072 servers Daisy’s algorithm scheduled chains with 10 NFs in under 0.8 seconds on average while fully utilizing the network. This is 82x faster than a theoretically complete, constraint-solver-based chain placement engine. I will also describe our ongoing work on a design of Daisy that combines all three of the key ideas with the chain SLAs to make VNF outsourcing at DC scale a reality.

Nodir Kodirov is a fifth year PhD student at University of British Columbia (UBC). He is broadly interested in Systems, with a particular focus on networked systems within the data center. Recently, he has been working on challenges of running Network Functions at datacenter scale. Before joining the graduate school at UBC, Nodir was at Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) of South Korea where he worked on cloud networking related projects from 2010 to 2013. Prior to ETRI, Nodir received his MSc in Konkuk University in South Korea, and a BSc from Tashken University of Information Technologies (TUIT) in Uzbekistan.
