Connecting To The NetBar
1. Turn off your computer.
2. Connect the NetBar RJ45 cable to the ethernet card on your
computer. NOTE: If you card isn't compatible, you may need
to purchase an adapter. Adapters are available at the
Computer Store (or from the faculty member sponsoring the
course).
3. Turn on your computer.
4. If you are running Win95, run winipcfg
When a Win5 machine is moved to or from the NetBar network,
the user must renew the DHCP lease, as other IP addresses will
not work on the NetBar. In the winipcfg dialog box, click
the release button, then click the renew button.
5. Telnet to IP address 128.2.8.2
6. Log in with your Andrew userid and password.
You should see "Andrew NetBar, version 2.01b",
then
"Switching to VLAN switch".
(You will also note a "Connection to host lost" dialog.
This is OKAY. It only means you have been switched onto
the network.)
7. You are now connected to the Network.
Disconnecting from the NetBar
1. Simply disconnect your computer from the outlet.
2. If you are running Win95, run winipcfg
This is to release the DHCP lease, as the NetBar IP address
will not work anywhere but the NetBar.
Note: Using MacOS
If you are running MacOs, and you want to use Appletalk services, you
many need to "jump-start" the Appletalk stack.
If the machine is using Open Transport, open and close the Appletalk
control panel.
If the machine is using Classic Networking, bring up the chooser and
deactivate
Appletalk. Then reactivate it.
IP Addresses
Students using laptop machines in conjunction with classes should
avoid "making up" IP addresses in order to use their computers in the
dorms. This is not the correct methodology and will most likely not
work. Students with loaner laptops should use the online register
system to obtain an IP address, assigned by Data Communications
(dc0m@andrew.cmu.edu).
Use the follwing web site to register student machines via email:
