Stars in my Pocket Like Grains of Sand

by Samuel Delaney

Review by Bill Johnston

Stars in my Pocket Like Grains of Sand by Samuel Delaney has just been reprinted and is available in town, so I think I should warn you about it. I realize I haven't read that many books by Delaney, but I liked this book even less than Dhalgren, which is saying a lot.

The book starts with the only survivor of a destroyed planet being taken to her new home. That part is rather interesting and made me believe the book was good, but after she arrives the story turns to interspecies sexual parlors, perfect sexual matching, and (too graphic for my tastes) sex scenes. Before the cries of homophobia go up, I'd like to say I've hated other books for a lower sex to plot ratio in heterosexual form. The book sort of ground to a halt instead of ending, but I find it hard to be disappointed; I'm just glad it ended.
