The Centauri Device

by M. John Harrison

Review by Bill Johnston

The Centauri Device by M. John Harrison comes highly recommended by The Reader's Guide to Science Fiction, but I cannot see why. It is an apocryphal conflict about a man who is wanted by the five most powerful groups in known space, but somehow he manages to escape several times and survive the destruction of two of them, and of course win in the end. While it is highly descriptive of its world and characters, it fails to give a believable plot.
