Vacancy Notice       Research Specialist, Senior.        Number 7007020

Anticipated Hiring Range: $32,037-41,668 depending upon experience.
Hours:  Regular,  8am-5pm
The work location will be Flagstaff, AZ.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Will participate in development of new digital analysis
remote-sensing techniques. Areas of concentration will be geometric
characterization and calibration of new spacecraft instruments;
development of change-detection techniques, specifically for motion
and extent of continental ice; development and implimentation of
multispectral classification and mapping techniques for geologic
materials. Task includes identification of target areas and the
mission planning necessary to acquire the appropriate data. Products
will include algorithms, working computer implimentation, and internal
& open-literature reports describing this work. Technical interface
will include scientists and engineers within NASA, other federal
agencies, and similiar organizations in Japan. Some supervision of
technical staff is involved. May require occasional travel to Japan.

Position continuation is dependant upon NASA funding & may
terminate when funding is no longer available.

QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in physical science & 4 years related
research experience; OR, an equivalent combination of education and/or
experience from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have
been achieved.
    - Proficiency in Unix and C programming languages.
    - Familiarity with Fortran
    - Excellent skill in effective communication
    - Experience in digital data analysis & statistics, 
        especially as relates to remote sensing 
        and high-resolution imaging
    - Demonstrated ability to work independantly.
    - Demonstrated ability to deal with new complex technical systems.
Desired:
    - General knowledge of glaciology or geology & petrology
    - Knowledge of reflection spectroscopy.
    - Proficiency in IDL.
    - Proficiency in Solaris 2.4
    - Proficiency in 3-dimensional projective geometry
    - Experience with analysis of data from Thematic Mapper, 
         SPOT, TIMS, NIMS, AVIRIS or similiar instruments.
    - Proficiency with 1 & 2 dimensional transforms.
