camera and looking at the price of the setup I was wondering if maybe a
fairly good digital still camera might work as well and even give me the
portability.

To help you,

Still color camera are expensive if you want a good result, dont try to
use low cost still camera like Canon ION the camera use mono CCD and it's
a non numeric (analogic) record system and the quality is not sufficient
for image processing. In the Laboartory we use a such camera just for
feasibilty approach, just to see...

I'm not sure that still camera, like Kokak or others, use 3CCD chip,
generaly they use mosaic CCD, good for resolution but not perfect for the
color. With mono CCD you can have "moir" effect (stripe CCD) and the
spatial resolution is divided by three.

I think color video camera with 3CCD chip is the better choice if you want
a good colorimetry and resolution. You can try HI 8mm video recoder (SONY
for example) with 3CDD. You combine the two advantages and for the price
of a video camera you have a video recorder. HI 8mm quality it's some
times sufficient for image analysis. Beware use Y/C output if you want to
get the maximum quality result.

Still camera have others avantages like portability, flexibilty, capacity
to memorise in digital (10bits sometimes) the result...

Remember also that the results depends also on the rest of the image
processing chain: I mean the frame grabber of course...
