I am not affiliated with HP, but let me defend HP in two ways.

First, in an ideal world, the team who made the scanner would keep
constant watch on appropriate newsgroups and post a reply that
would end, "and what else can I share with you". As it stands, HP is
extremely good at providing information in many forms:

BBS - (208) 344-1691
Fax-back - (800) 333-1917 (doc #19921 for 3 pg scanner notes index)
CDROM - $45 from order line (800)457-1762, fax-back note #9025
HP Peripherals Developer Program - (619) 592-8308 for application
and various ftp sites.

Give them a call, they were extremely helpful when I called them.

Second, people internal to HP may be reluctant to join the discussion of
a technical newsgroup to disclose information that might erode their
competative advantage. They may be motivated to share how to integrate
scanners into systems (and will try to get you to buy a few),
but information about modeling and building scanners is another matter.

You might want to check two sources that have advancement of knowledge
as a primary goal:

Hewlett-Packard Journal is a monthly publication that includes scholarly
articles by HP engineers and scientists. Although it is a little too deep
and technical for what I do, it appears to be of extremely high quality.

You may request a free subscription on your company's printed letterhead by
writing to:

Editor, Hewlett-Packard Journal
3000 Hanover Street
Palo Alto, CA 94304

or

The HP Journal is available through WWW and can be viewed with Mosaic. URL is http://www.hp.com/hpj/Journal.html.

Alternatively, you may wish to purchase a book on scanning:

Super Scanning Techniques: The Hewlett-Packard Guide to Black and White
Imaging by Jerry B. Day, $24.00. You can order it from (800) 345-8112,
or for more info, get fax-back index 3705 at (800) 333-1917.

I know this doesn't answer your technical question, but hopefully, it will put
you in touch with resources that can.
