Dear Imagers and Mac Experts:

Due to some unknown computer problems I encounter TIFF files with damaged
data forks. The images were originally OK, it just happens after some
weeks or months of storage. Using Image, Photoshop, GraphicConverter
etc, such images cannot be opened at all or they have a shift in geometry
and colors ofter a certain break point. Is there software around to
repair at least minor damages?

My second question is regarding the source of this problem that also
affects Stuffit archives and MS Word files. I have a Mac Quadra 800 with
24 MB RAM running system D1-7.1, a Seagate ST3600N version 8514 built-in
harddisk with 500 MB, a built-in Sony CD-ROM, an Iomega Bernoulli drive
with 150 MB removable cartridges, and a Ricoh FS2 color scanner. I made
sure with SCSIProbe 3.0 that all of them have different IDs. Installed
are also two Videologic DVA-4000 cards.

All of the disks have been checked for viruses using recent software from
several companies. When the built-in harddisk was used for start-up, I
had a number of disk crashes. Damaged catalogue and desktop files were
part of the problem. Completely rebuilding the harddisk from scratch and
loading of new system software cured the problem for some time (days or
even weeks). After repair, MacTools reports that the harddisk is in good
condition with no bad sectors.

Now I use the removable Bernoulli cartridge for start-up. This has
minimized the problems on the harddisk, although not completely
eliminated. MacTools never ever detected any problems with the start-up
Bernoulli cartridges.

Also want to mention that there are some problems with reading and
writing floppy disks (damaged desktop files, bad catalogue structure
etc.) using the internal drive.

Naturally, nothing happens when the service person is here. He worked
for ten years with Apple in Cupertino and is very knowledgeable. He told
me he has a similar problem with one of his Mac PowerPCs. However, Apple
refused to comment on this. The problem probably originates from some
rare events not easy to demonstrate.

Does somebody know about these problems? Any suggestions to fix it?

Thank you for your help.
