If you want to stay within NIH Image, there is a document you might look
at to help you with a macro, or if needed pascal. It is intended for
beginners. Try looking on zippy.nimh.nih.gov in the file:

 /pub/nih-image/contrib/XtraDocs_Image156.sea.hqx

Inside is the file called Inside NIH Image 1.56, which may help you out.
