A number of people who are using the Zoom modems with a Mac are having
problems getting a good connection. I have discovered some settings
that seem quite reliable.

The default initialization string (and default setting) includes the
substring "N1", which means negotiate the highest possible speed
with the remote modem. I changed that to N0, meaning no negotiation.

I also added the string S37=9, which coerces a 9600 bps connection.

Within my communication program, I still have the speed set to 57,600.
(For some reason, setting it to 9600 causes problems.) And I have
the hardware handshaking parameter turned ON.

I have tried this with White kNight and with the Comm. program that
came with the modem, and it seems to work. (In White Knight, you must
explicitly execute the initialization string, it does not happen automatically)

Even though the speed is coerced to 9600, the connect message says
"CONNECT 57600". When connecting to the bridge, you should not hit return
after the "connect" message. When connecting to DAC, you should.

Good luck!

I have been requested to post the complete initialization string, so
here it is. Today I got a good connection the first time on both CCS
and DAC modems.

Having received different bits of advise, and tried some of them, here
are the results:

I used QuickLink II Fax (comes with the Zoom) and Microphone II.
In both cases, settings were as follows
Terminal: vt100
Baud: 57,600
DataBits: 8
Parity: None
StopBits: 1

QuickLink:
The init string that the factory sends doesn't work. There are probably
many ways to fix this. Removing it altogether doesn't work.
(Comes with: AT&FE1L1V1X4&C1&D2S0=0S7=60)
AT&K4 does (one vote for Gene for President).
So, Under Settings:Modem Settings... change the init string
to AT&K4. Exit QL II. Turn modem on. Re-enter QLII.
Dial (easiest way, add to the Phone List).
Now, I didn't try file transfer. Maybe some of the other 27 characters
in the init string are necessary for this. I CAN login though.
I also tried AT&K4L0 to try to make the modem quieter, but there
wasn't much difference. It did "work" though.

MicroPhone II
With this package, under the Communications... menu, set the Driver to
Hayes V-series/Ultra
Flow-Control Xon-Xoff
All other settings as above.
This sends the init string:
ATE1Q0V1X4&C1&D0&K0&Q5S0=0S36=7

The reasons for the intriguing similarities and even more intriguing
differences between the various init strings is left as an exercise to the
readers.
