VME stands for Versa Modules Europe I think. I think it originates
with Motorola and a couple of other manufacturers. Intel etc were working
with a Bus system called Multibus. Motorola had a rival version called
Versa modules but realised that if it was to get anywhere it had to
use euro-rack standard hardware configurations. The result was VME
which drove Multibus off the market. You can buy various instrument
modules from a number of vendors in VME standard as well as various
bits of processing hardware. There is a trade association called
VITA based in the Netherlands who have a directory of all the modules
conforming to the standard. There is also a high speed extension called
VXIbus.
