Hello Ken,

Chapter 12 of the book "Mathematical Morphology in Image Processing"
(ed. E. R. Dougherty) is a good summary of the watershed algorithm. 
The title is "Morphological Approach to Segmentation: The Watershed
Transformation" by S. Beucher and F. Meyer. You may find other
publications are helpful:
1) F. Meyer and S. Beucher, Mrophological Segmentation, J. Visual
   Communications and Image Represeation, Vol.1, No.1, pp.21, 1990
2) L. Vincent and P. Soille, Watersheds in Digital Spaces: An
